My Nighttime Curl Ritual: All 7 Steps for Soft, Defined Curls.

The Sunshine Roots Curl Ritual

Here’s my complete nighttime routine for soft, glossy, bouncy curls.

One of the questions I get asked most is, “What do you use in your hair to get your curls like that?”

The secret isn’t one product. It’s how I layer moisture, oils, butter, and styling products. In my email I shared the short version. This is the full routine: every step, why I do it, and how to change it to fit your own hair.

What You’ll Need

The Routine, Step by Step

Start with dry hair, and part it into sections before you begin.

Step 01

Mist Your Hair With Moisture

Using a misting bottle, spray each section with water, or water mixed with leave-in conditioner. Make sure it reaches your ends and your scalp.

Why it matters: Water is what hydrates your hair. Oils and butters don’t add water. They help hold it in. That’s why this step comes first. Aim for hair that feels damp, not dripping.

Step 02

Care for Your Scalp

Apply a few drops of Citrus Bloom Hair & Scalp Oil directly to your scalp. I love making scalp care part of my routine instead of treating it as an afterthought.

Try this: Add a few drops along each part, then spread them with your fingertips. Start with less than you think you need. You can always add more, but too much can leave your scalp feeling heavy. Like any scented product, test a small spot first if your skin is sensitive.

Step 03

Give Your Ends Some Love

Scoop a little Citrus Bloom Whipped Hair Butter onto your fingertips and apply it directly to your ends. Then use the Wooden Paddle Brush to gently detangle and spread the butter through your hair.

This is one of my favorite moments. I can already see my ends curling up with a glossy finish.

Why the ends? Your ends are the oldest, driest part of your hair, so they need the most care. Start brushing at the bottom and work your way up. That way you’re not pulling a tangle all the way down.

Step 04

Comb and Massage Your Scalp

Take the Wooden Comb and gently work through your hair while massaging your scalp. The rounded teeth feel wonderful against your scalp, and the massage is one of the most relaxing parts of my routine.

Take your time: This is the step where the whole routine slows down. Small, gentle motions are all you need.

Step 05

Define Your Curls

Add one pump of styling foam mousse and work it through your hair strands. At this point, my curls look glossy, defined, and full of bounce.

Full honesty: The mousse isn’t a Sunshine Roots product. It’s my personal pick to help hold my curl pattern all day. Use the one you already love. The oils and butter care for your hair, and the mousse helps keep the shape.

Step 06

Protect Your Style Overnight

Since I usually style my hair at night, I choose how I want my curls to look the next morning. Sometimes I do two-strand twists. Other nights I use flexi rods or perm rods. Each one gives a slightly different finished look.

Twists or Rods? A Quick Guide

Two-Strand Twists

The look: Soft, stretched, defined waves and curls.
Good for: Beginners, since you need no extra tools.
Tip: Smaller twists give you more definition. Larger twists give you a fuller look.

Flexi Rods or Perm Rods

The look: Bouncy, uniform spiral curls.
Good for: A more polished, even curl.
Tip: Set them on damp hair, not dripping wet, and wrap the ends smoothly so they don’t bend.

For either one: Cover your hair with a satin bonnet or scarf to keep your set in place while you sleep. And don’t take it down until your hair is fully dry. Taking it down damp is one of the most common causes of frizz.

Step 07

Wake Up and Style

The next morning, gently unravel your twists or remove your rods. Depending on my mood, I might lay my edges, pin my hair up, or simply wear my curls out.

And just like that, I’m ready to go with soft, shiny, defined curls.

Small tip: If your curls feel a little dry or puffy, rub one tiny drop of oil between your palms and lightly smooth it over the surface. A little goes a long way.

Make It Yours

Your routine doesn’t have to look exactly like mine. Here are a few starting points. They’re general guidelines, not rules. Your hair will tell you what it likes.

Fine or thin curls

Use fewer drops of oil and keep the butter on your ends only. Too much product can weigh fine curls down.

Thick or coarse curls

Work in smaller sections so every strand gets coated, and give your ends a bit more butter. Take extra time when you detangle.

Low porosity hair (water and products seem to sit on top)

Use thin layers on damp hair, and go lighter with the butter. Heavy layers can sit on the surface instead of absorbing.

High porosity hair (absorbs water fast, dries out fast)

Layering is your friend. Mist well, then use the butter to help hold that moisture in.

If Something Feels Off

My curls feel crunchy or stiff.

You may be using too much mousse. Try half a pump and build up from there.

My hair is frizzy in the morning.

Your hair may not have been completely dry when you took it down, or the set got disturbed overnight. Try a satin bonnet or scarf, and wait until your hair is fully dry.

My scalp feels greasy.

Use fewer drops of oil next time, and spread them along your parts rather than in one spot.

My ends still feel dry.

Mist them a little more before you add the butter, then add a bit more butter on the very ends.
